The Sandstone Volunteer Group comprises individual & club climbers and others who have an interest in maintaining the rock and environment of the sandstone crags in Kent and East Sussex by:
  • disseminating the objects of 'The Sandstone Code' and encouraging good practice' which will prevent the heavy wear and tear to which the rock has been subjected over many years
  • carrying out work to clear overgrowth and brush where appropriate
  • repairing damaged rock, discouraging grafitti and other gratuitous damage
  • recognizing and protecting unique areas of rock where botanical or geological SSSI status could threaten future access
  • encouraging participation in projects as they arise by enlisting the help of professional and voluntary bodies, where applicable, and the climbing community
  • creating sustainable use of this unique climbing area through maintaining good relationships with the owners and custodians of the crags.

Harrisons Project 2011-16

Details are now available regarding the proposed work at Harrisons Rocks due to take place over the next five years. Interested parties are invited to download the Outline, Management Plan, Tree Work Schedule, Map and Comments submitted to date - or go HERE to read the Outline.

Vision
To protect the woodland and cliff environment and maximize the scenic grandeur of the location for all.
To regenerate the health of the woodland to support more fauna and flora and restore the rock face to a climbable state, consistent with minimizing environmental damage.

Work Plan
To divide the woodland into 5 distinct compartment areas for regeneration to give a five year rolling plan. Work is planned to start early in the new year.

The Next Steps
A Woodland Plan has been drawn up for approval by the Forestry Commission (FC), but to enable all interested parties to contribute, we are consulting widely before submitting it. The plan will be put on the FC website for a period of six weeks.
